Happy Birthday memories of Grandmother Rosie Franklin

Tribute to Grandmother Rosie Franklin shares moments of her life... a simple life but she was never still, always had food for family and neighbors when they dropped by...

By Marlton Loy

Talking about birthdays with Bev last night and it hit me...today, January 4th, was my grandmother's birthday. Rosie Franklin, Born in 1914.

She lived to be only 70 years old, dying of cancer. She lived a simple life, but was busy all the time. If she was sitting, she was sewing. She sewed and embroidered on a regular basis.

Her garden was huge and she was there morning and evening. She grew everything...

rhubarb, peanuts, etc. Often, she had flowers bordering her garden. She would sometimes fish with us. She knew how to cook anything brought into the house whether it be turtle, squirrel, etc.

Nothing went to waste... I can still see hog heads sitting in her kitchen while she was preparing to make souse. There was always food for family and neighbors when they dropped by.

Always canned and frozen fruits and vegetables from the orchard or garden, she would pick polk and greens when available. There were always meats in the freezer or chickens running around for chicken and dumplings.

I believe there were always pintos and cornbread on the stove. No running water, no indoor plumbing. She had very little money, but wanted for nothing. I don't know if I ever gave her a present or wished her a Happy Birthday. Today, I realize how lucky I was to have had her in my life. Happy Birthday Granny!
