LWC Wrestling finishes 7th at NWCA National Duals

By Christopher Coombs

Louisville, KY - The Lindsey Wilson Wrestling team battled their way to a seventh place finish at the 2019 NWCA National Duals in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday morning.

After a sluggish start against Southeastern that plagued the Blue Raiders in their first match of the day, the Blue Raiders were able to respond against Campbellsville in the seventh place match that saw them win 7-of-10 matches on their way to their third victory for the tournament.

No. 8 Lindsey Wilson 21 - No. 13 Southeastern 24
A slow start from the Blue Raiders, one that saw them fall in the first six matches of the contest, was just too much to overcome as they would trail 24-0 before falling 24-21.

LWC's Cagen Wallace (No. 14 at 125) fell on a close 12-11 decision to Edward Barratt to open the match as Southeastern would pick up six team points at 133 and 141-pounds before rattling off three straight decision victories to increase their lead to 24-0.

Brett Bradford (No. 10 at 174) then managed to record Lindsey Wilson first points of the match when he pinned Carlos Diaz in 1:24. Lucas Miozza followed that with a 7-2 decision victory over Nathan Cleland to trail the Fire 24-9.

Avery Buckman (No. 13 at 197) and Brandon Reed (No. 1 at Heavyweight) then closed out the match with back-to-back pins. Buckamn pinned Jesse Pryor (No. 17 at 197) to the mat 43 seconds into the second period as Reed pinned Ben Cruz in 2:03, but LWC's comeback bid would fall short.

No. 8 Lindsey Wilson - No. 19 Campbellsville
After falling in their first match of the day Lindsey Wilson was set to square off with Campbellsville (Ky.) in the seventh place match.

This time Lindsey Wilson managed a good start to the contest, as Wallace and Brady Moser both picked up decision victories. Wallace defeated Michael Beets on a 10-4 decision while Moser managed a 9-3 decision victory over Marvin Galette.

The Tigers managed to take a 10-6 lead when LWC fell on a major decision at 141-pounds and were forced to forfeit at 149-pounds.

Mark Taijeron and Derrick Smallwood managed to regain the lead for Lindsey Wilson over the next two matches as they produced decision victories. Taijeron defeated Michael Diemer (No. 15 at 157) on a close 4-3 final score. Derrick Smallwood (No. 8 at 157) wrestled up a weight class for LWC and squared off with Gavin Smith to pick up a 7-2 victory.

Brett Bradford (No. 10 at 174) then increased the LWC lead to 18-10 when he pinned Mahlic Sallah (No. 19 at 174) in 2:03. Lucas Mioza fell to Aaron Mosley 3-1 in the sudden victory-1 period but Avery Buckman was able to take down David Richardson during the next bout 5-3 in his sudden victory-1 period.

Campbellsville forfeited the heavyweight match as LWC would win 27-13 to finish in seventh place overall at the national duals.

Lindsey Wilson is back in action on January 15 when they play host to Mid-South Conference foe Cumberland (Tenn.) at Biggers Sports Center at 7 p.m. CT.
