KY Youth Assembly awards given to several CHS students

By Calen McKinney

Campbellsville High School students brought home several awards from the Kentucky Youth Assembly session recently. The school's Kentucky YMCA Youth Association chapter attended the annual conference on Nov. 18-20 at Crowne Plaza in Louisville and the state capitol in Frankfort.

The Kentucky Youth Assembly is a three-day program in which students serve as part of a model state government.

Students learn about a variety of issues, develop critical thinking skills and have the opportunity to articulate their beliefs while interacting with students from other schools in Kentucky.

At this year's conference, Cole Kidwell, a junior, won an Outstanding Delegate award.

Y Club advisors vote on who receives the Outstanding Delegate award. Winners are those who are outstanding speakers at KYA and exemplify all the Y Club characteristics.

Brandon Greer, a senior, received an Outstanding Speaker award.

The CHS group as a whole received a Premiere Delegation award.

Kidwell, Greer and juniors Alli Wilson and Ben Arachi presented a bill, which was signed into law.

The bill contained a tax incentive for mountain top removal areas in Kentucky, to be used for solar panel farms.

It was highly ranked and was a governor's choice bill.

The bill team presented at the capitol in the House of Representatives and Senate chambers.

CHS senior Jeremiah Jackson and sophomore Zaquan Cowan served as presiding officers at the conference, after being elected at last year's conference.

Jackson served as Editor in Chief and Cowan was president of the Bluegrass Senate.

All the other CHS students who attended the convention went as delegates and spoke about various bills and voted in the election for the new KYA officers.

CHS students attending include freshmen Abi Turner, Adin Hunt, Blake Settle, Brae Washington, Jack Sabo and Peyton Dabney; sophomores Clark Kidwell, Zaquan Cowan, Jake Dicken and Raj Patel; juniors Alli Wilson, Bailey Thompson, Ben Arachi, Cole Kidwell, Dillon Whitaker, Gavin Johnson, Isabella Osborne, Jan Douwes Dekker, Siera Owens, Ketayah Taylor, Zaria Cowan, Lauryn Agathen and Savanna Brockman; and seniors Abbie Dicken, Brandon Greer, Elizabeth Sullivan, Myles Murrell, Reagan Knight, Samantha Mason, Tatem Wiseman, Jeremiah Jackson and Salena Ritchie.

CHS teacher Susan Dabney is the CHS Y Club sponsor.
