LWC Women's Basketball defeats Virgin Islands 78-47

By Christopher Coombs

The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team defeated the Virgin Islands on Saturday afternoon at Biggers Sports Center by a final score of 78-47.

Heidi Huffman managed a season-high 25 points after connecting on 7-of-12 three point attempts in the game. Reagan Turner was the only other Blue Raider in double figures as she recorded 16 points and a season-high seven assists. Tyrah Engleman just missed out on a double-double after she produced nine rebounds and nine points.

The Blue Raiders are back in action on Monday, December 3, 2018, when they take on Simmons (KY) at 5pmCT in Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard Drive, Columbia, KY.

Lindsey Wilson and the Virgin Islands got off to an even start in the game as the two squads played to an 11-9 LWC advantage over the first seven minutes of the game, but the Blue Raider would string together a late quarter run that gave them a 10 point lead after the first ten minutes of action at 22-11. Huffman led the Blue Raiders with ten points after cashing in on two three's in the quarter.

The Blue Raiders were able to carry that momentum into the second frame as they scored the first six point of the half and were able to double their lead to 33-13 with 6:03 on the clock.

A pair of three pointers, one by the Blue Raiders and one by the Lady Bucs would be the only scoring over the final minutes of the half as LWC would take a 36-16 lead into halftime.

Lindsey Wilson's defense limited the Virgin Islands into shooting just 19.4 (6-of-31) percent from the field in the half as the Blue Raiders connected on 37.5 (15-of-40) percent of their attempts. LWC also controlled the glass as they grabbed 29 boards to the Lady Bucs 21 while they were able to turn the effort into nine second chance points.

The Blue Raiders opened the third quarter on a 12-2 run, vaulting them to a commanding 48-18 lead after they were able to make five of their first six attempts from the field.

The Lady Bucs would respond with a 12-2 run trimming the LWC lead to 20 with just over four minute to play. But Lindsey Wilson would close out the half on an 8-2 run after Turner made a layup and Huffman knocked down three consecutive three point attempts. The Bucs would score on an uncontested layup as time expired to close out the quarter.

Virgin Islands scored a quick five point to open the final frame, giving LWC a 61-37 lead but Lindsey Wilson responded with a 11-0 run as Turner scored eight straight points for LWC in the process to give the Blue Raiders a 72-37 lead with just under five minute to play. The Lady Bucs closed out the game on a 10-6 run as Lindsey Wilson managed a 78-47 victory.
