Betty's Country Cooking celebrating 30th Anniversary Betty's Country Cooking, the landmark Columbia restaurant on North Hwy 55, will be celebrating its 30th Anniversary on Dec 5, 2018. The Ollestads and the Kesslers plan to mark the milestone with a week-long extravaganza of thirty-cent drink and dessert specials, visits from Santa Claus, gift card specials, and big-ticket giveaways, including a TV and tickets to a Tennessee Titans football game. Betty began her restaurant career in 1977, working in management with Charlie and Fern Roy at Druthers, and later managing The Country Inn, when it was owned by the Fletcher family. In 1988, Betty ventured out on her own, opening The Donut Shop, on Russell Road, with Rich (ex-husband and still best friend). Many people followed Betty from place to place, and, after a few years, the business moved to the old Harold's Steak House building on South 55 to become a full service restaurant. In 1994, Betty purchased the building that had housed Giles Food Mart on Campbellsville Road, and it has been the home of Betty's Country Cooking ever since. In 2017, the Ollestad family announced a partnership with Kevin & Arlinda Kessler and their family, so that, after 40 years in the restaurant business, Betty could get a little "time away from the daily grind." (You can read more about the transition at Where's Betty?). Betty Ollestad has been, and continues to be, an important part of the community that she serves. Betty says that, "She attributes her success first to God, and second to her family," a group which has always included her customers and employees. Her daughter, Donna Cain, says, "At this 30 year landmark, we would like to say thank you to everyone for your kindness, love, graciousness, and support. This truly comes from Betty, Mitch, myself and all the Betty's Country Cooking Family. We hope Betty's Country Cooking is a tradition in Columbia for years to come." The family plans to compile a memory book for Betty after the first of the year, and is asking customers, friends, and vendors to send an email with stories and pictures to bcc30th@gmail.com, or, if you prefer, to write a note, story, or letter and drop it off at the restaurant. Celebrate at Betty's from December 1st through 9th To celebrate the "BIG 30," Betty's will be running all kinds of "30th specials", giving away gift baskets, a 55 inch 4K HDTV, Ham gifts, Coffee gifts, Fruit baskets, Restaurant gift certificates, and much more. Two Premium tickets to the Tennessee Titans Washington Redskins game on December 22 will be given away to a lucky winner as well. A number of $.30 items will be offered, including soft drinks, tea and coffee, ice cream or cookies. There will be special drop in visits from Santa, to share some Christmas cheer! Children may drop a letter to Santa in a special delivery mailbox. Santa will draw a letter to give away a 6-foot stocking full of toys at some point during the week. Drawing winners will be randomly selected throughout the week. The drawings will start on Saturday, December 1, 2018, and run through Sunday, December 9th. Betty's daughter, Donna, says, "We're very excited about this major milestone for the restaurant. We can't wait for our customers, family and friends to come and visit, and have some fun with Betty and family. Everyone who knows and loves Betty and who have been patrons of the Betty's Country Cooking family and friends for 30 years are encouraged to share their stories. We welcome all of the community, near and far, to help us celebrate this wonderful milestone." This story was posted on 2018-11-29 13:13:22
