LWC wrestling knocks off Williams Baptist and Marian at LWC Duals

By Christopher Coombs

The Lindsey Wilson wrestling team picked up a pair of dual wins after defeating No. 10 Williams Baptist (Ark.) and (RV) Marian (Ind.) on Saturday at Biggers Sports Center during the LWC Duals.

The No. 8-ranked Blue Raiders defeated Williams Baptists 29-12 to start their day and then took down Marian in a close 27-21 match that took three straight Blue Raider wins to close out the match in a come from behind victory. LWC won a total of 12 matches out of 20 on the day as half of their victories came in the form of pins and two came on major decision.

"Miozza saved the day. He had a string of upset performances and came through big for his team. That kind of senior leadership is crucial," Corey Ruff said. "It's early and we have had some critical members of our team get off to a surprisingly slow start but we know what they're capable of. It's a process for them right now."

The Blue Raiders won six of ten matches in a convincing victory over No.10-ranked Williams Baptist.

Cagen Wallace sparked the Blue Raiders in their opening match when he kicked things off in the 125-pound bout with a pin over Robert Fairchild in 3:26.

Brady Moser (No. 4 at 133) had an early 4-1 lead and was in control of the match when he got caught in a near side cradle late in the 2nd period which gave Tanner Irwin (No. 7 at 133) a 7-4 advantage. Moser would escape to start third period but a late takedown for Irwin sealed the match a 9-5, cutting the LWC lead in half at 6-3.

Trent Johnson would record Lindsey Wilson's second pin of the day, doing so in the 141-pound weight class against Pierre Dowling in the first frame at 1:45.

Williams Baptist would again cut the LWC lead in half when Trey Smith produced a 6-1 decision over Lindsey Wilson's Austin Ramsey.

Joe Koontz would produce the Blue Raiders first major decision of the day when he upset Kyle Lee (No. 11 at 157) with a 9-1 major decision. Williams Baptist's Tristin Meador would then pick up a 5-1 decision victory over Bryce Hoffman at 165 pounds.

The Blue Raiders picked up wins in three of the final four matches of the night. Cole Overman (No. 11 at 174) pinned Daryus Webb in his match.

Colton Gonzalez (No. 4 at 184) would battle his opponent Jeff Haley (No. 9 at 184) all the way to a sudden victory period. Gonzales was finally able to finish a single leg takedown in OT-1 as he had put himself in positions to win many times in regulation but could complete the move.

Brandon Reed (No. 1 at Heavyweight) would pick up Lindsey Wilson's final win of the contest when he was able to produce a 10-1 major decision victory over Malecek Caton (No. 17 at 197), giving the Blue Raiders a convincing 29-12 victory.

Wallace picked up his second victory of the day when he took down Christopher Sharp at 125 pounds via an 8-6 decision.

At 133 pounds, Moser was caught in a near side cradle by Carson Willis and a quick fall occurred, giving Marian a 6-3 advantage.

Lindsey Wilson then won back-to-back matches at 141 and 149 pounds to regain the lead at 12-6. Trent Johnson pinned Jesus Mancera in just 44 seconds, marking his second win of the day, as Austin Ramsey then won on a 2-1 decision over Bailey Moore.

Marian would quickly regain the lead when they were able to produce back-to-back pins at 157 and 165 pounds. The Blue Raiders Mark Taijeron had a 6-3 lead and riding time secured when a mistake left him vulnerable and Anthony Mosconi was able to pin him to the mat at 6:50. Hoffman would then be pinned by Trezdon O'Neal in 1:56 during the first period of his match.

Marian's Cameron Simmons would pick up their final win of the night when he upset Cole Overman (No. 11 at 174) in a tight 10-9 decision, giving Marian a 21-12 lead with three matches remaining.

Gonzalez would get the Blue Raiders headed in the right direction when he was able to pick up a 3-2 decision over Alston Bane in the 184-pound match.

Lucas Miozza (No. 11 at 184) wrestled up a weight class at 197-pounds and was up 8-2 before securing the pin fall over David Delph at 2:33 while barely keeping his legs in bounds to secure the fall.

The pin tied the dual at 21 all with just one match remaining.

Reed dominated his heavyweight match against Ethan Bunce (No. 11 at heavyweight) with a pin at 5:52 of the match. Had Reed not pinned his opponent during the final moments of the match, it would have been stopped for a 16-1 technical fall.

With the three straight victories to end the match the Blue Raider claimed a 27-21 victory over Marian, their second victory of the afternoon.

Lindsey Wilson is back in action on Saturday Nov. 17 when they travel to St. Louis, Mo., to compete at the Joe Parisi Open, Lindenwood University Robert F. Hyland Arena, 209 South Kings Highway, Saint Charles, MO.
