LWC Women's Soccer wins MSC Tournament, Beats Cumberland 3-0

By Christopher Coombs

Bowling Green, KY - Amara Safuan's goal in the 26th minute was all the Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team would need in a 3-0 victory over Cumberland (Tenn.) in the Mid-South Conference Women's Soccer Tournament Finals today in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

With the win, Lindsey Wilson (10-3-2) clinches the conference's automatic bid into the NAIA National Tournament which begins next weekend at host sites around the NAIA. The tournament field is scheduled to be announced on Monday.

Lindsey Wilson controlled the action over the first 20 minutes of play as they managed to create a balanced attack in their attacking third that resulted in six shots for the Blue Raiders but all of the attempts were off target.

Amara Safuan was able to break the scoreless draw during the 26th minute. A Lindsey Wilson player drove just inside the penalty box and was taken down, resulting in a penalty kick. Safuan was called upon to take the attempt and powered a shot right of Cumberland's goalkeeper for the goal.

The Blue Raiders would strike again in the half, this time during the 43rd minute. Sina Cavelti dribbled all the way into the 6-yard before her first pass attempt deflected right back to her. After gathering the ball she then played off another pass to Emelie Liljered who was able to finish into a wide-open goal from point blank range.

The LWC defensive unit was able to shut down the Cumberland offensive attack as they held the Phoenix to zero shots in the half.

Lindsey Wilson would nearly strike in the 58th and 72nd minutes when Veronica Kurtz sent corner kicks into the box. The first attempt was one timed by Yvonne Ploeg and would be just deflected away by Cumberland goalkeeper Ashley Kambeitz out of play. The second one would again find Ploeg and who fired the shot towards the goal that was blocked again by Kambeitz. The ball came to rest on the goal line before it was cleared to safety.

The Blue Raiders would increase their lead to 3-0 in the 75th minute when Ploeg played a long ball that found Delfina Santellan behind Cumberland defenders. After taking two touches she slotted a ball near post for the score.

Lindsey Wilson would manage 21 shots, seven on goal, as the Blue Raider defenders were able to hold the Phoenix to just one shot attempt for the match. The Phoenix only shot was blocked away by LWC defenders.

The MSC Tournament title is the 17th for the Blue Raiders and their sixth straight. Lindsey Wilson has won 17 of 19 MSC Tournament titles since joining the Mid-South in 2000.
