LWC Women's Soccer advances to MSC Tournament Finals

Bowling Green, KY - The Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team defeated Campbellsville University 4-2 in the MSC Women's Soccer Tournament Semifinals on Thursday morning. LWC used two goals in each half to pick up the victory.

With the win Lindsey Wilson advances to the MSC Women's Soccer Tournament Finals tomorrow afternoon at 4pmCT in Bowling Green, Kentucky where they will face either No. 3 seeded Cumberland (TN) or No. 7 seed Georgetown (KY).


The Blue Raiders offensive attack produced four different goal scorers in Emelie Liljered, Veronica Kurtz, Sina Cavelti and Alicia Thoresen. Yvonne Ploeg tallied two assists in the match as Cavelti and Thea Birgerud each added one. LWC goalkeeper Jovana Ivanovic recorded six saves.

Lindsey Wilson used a slight 18-15 edge in total shots as both squads recorded eight shots on goal during the match. Campbellsville committed 18 fouls as the Blue Raiders were called for nine.

Lindsey Wilson was able to create opportunities early as they managed four shots with one of their attempts on goal across the first nine minutes of action. They added five corner kicks to really apply pressure to the CU defenders early in the match.

During the 10th minute, Cavelti broke into the 18-yard box, drawing Tiger defenders to her that left Liljered open 20-yards out. Cavelti played a ball to Liljered, who after taking one touch fired a low hard shot towards the far post, out of the reach of Tigers goalkeeper Katelyn Young.

Nine minutes later the Blue Raiders would strike again. Birgerud played a long through ball to Kurtz who was able to chip the ball around a charging CU goalkeeper to the penalty mark and finish into a wide open goal, increasing the LWC advantage to two goals.

Campbellsville would get on the board during the 37th minute cutting the Blue Raiders lead in half at 2-1. Lakin Walls chipped a ball into the goal over Blue Raider goalkeeper Jovana Ivanovic from the left corner of the 18-yard box after Claudia Eckstein played a long through ball from just over midfield.

The Tigers would control the ball in their attacking third for the remainder of the half managing three shot but the Blue Raider defense was able to deny the attempts preserving their 2-1 lead after 45 minutes.

Lindsey Wilson would produce 10 shots in the half with five attempts on goal as Campbellsville produced six shots, two on goal. The Blue Raiders added seven corner kicks to the Tigers one in the half but neither team could convert on the opportunities.

The first fifteen minutes of the second half was controlled by Campbellsville as they pushed the ball inside of Lindsey Wilson territory, producing four shots with two coming on goal but Ivanovic was there to deny the attempts.

Lindsey Wilson would appear to score during the 64th minute when Ploeg broke behind CU defenders and finished into the goal but the play was flagged offside, eliminating the play.

The Blue Raiders would add an insurance goal with just over 14 minutes left in the game. Cavelti headed in a Ploeg free kick for the score from just outside the 6-yard box. Lindsey Wilson's Thoresen would add to the LWC lead when she scored during the games 87th minute on a shot that beat the keeper near post.

Just one minute later, Molly Hall capitalized on a Blue Raider mishandled ball inside the 18-yard box to cut the LWC lead to 4-2. The CU comeback bid would fall short as time would expire giving the Blue Raiders the win.
