New Hepatitis A cases in Casey, Green, and Taylor No additional cases of Hepatitis A were reported in Adair, Metcalfe or Russell Counties between October 13 and October 20, 2018, but new Hepatitis A cases were reported in Casey, Green, and Taylor Counties during that period, according to the latest report from Kentucky Department for Public Health, available at chfs.ky.gov. No data was available for Cumberland County. Taylor has seen 1-3 addition cases per week for the last several weeks of reporting, bringing the total to 37 reported cases during the August 1, 2017 – October 20, 2018 period covered by the KY DPH's most recent publication (Acute Hepatitis A Outbreak Week 42 Report (PDF).
According to the Cabinet for Health and Family Services web site, "Similar to hepatitis A outbreaks in other states, the primary risk factors remain illicit drug use and homelessness. A contaminated food source has not been identified, and HAV transmission is believed to be occurring through person-to-person contact." Vaccination remains the safest and most effective way to prevent Hepatitis A. This story was posted on 2018-11-02 05:58:26
