Lagermann family receives Outstanding Forest Steward Award The Department of Natural Resources presented the Outstanding Forest Steward Award to William and Chris Lagermann of Red Lick Ranch, LLC. Red Lick Ranch is located in Metcalfe County. Submitted by Chris Lagermann The annual Kentucky Governor's Conference on Energy and the Environment was held at the Lexington Convention Center on October 11-12, 2018. Charles Snavely, Secretary of the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet opened the conference on Thursday. Kentucky Governor Matthew G. Bevin addressed the conference which addressed environmental issues, the future of Kentucky's energy profile, water and wastewater issues and solutions, and projects to reclaim abandoned mine lands for economic development and the future of regulated energy. Nearly 300 people attended the two-day event. There were various panels and presentations about such topics as Clean Water and Kentucky Abandoned Mine Lands and Economic Development. The conference continued on the morning of Friday, October 12, with Steve Winberg, Assistant Secretary of the U. S. Department of Energy offering the Opening Remarks. After the Abandoned Mine Presentation and a Panel on Energy moderated by Charles Snavely, the group broke for lunch. Kentucky Lt. Governor Jeanean Hampton was the lunch speaker. She concluded the event by presenting awards including the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission Kentucky Heritage Land Conservation Fund Stewardship Award presented to Clay Hill Memorial Forest at Campbellsville University. The Energy and Environment Cabinet presented the Glasgow Water Company with a Kentucky Excellence Award. The Office of the Secretary chose Tom FitzGerald as the recipient of the 2018 Secretary's Award. This award is given to a person, business, municipality or non-governmental organization that has demonstrated long-term leadership and commitment to sustainability, environmental protection, conservation of natural resources or is responsible for the development of energy resources. "Mr. FitzGerald has been hailed as the "watchdog of the environment" in the Bluegrass State". Resource professionals are always contacted before tackling a specific concern to ensure all information and recommendations are available before moving forward with a project. The Lagermann have expanded their knowledge of property management through classes including woodland owner short courses, Kentucky Master Logger, and those offered through the UK Cooperative Extension Service. Some of the Lagermann's projects have included: timber stand improvement; establishing native grasses; installing a high tunnel; raising and planting blueberry bushes and dallies for wildlife; planting fruit and pine trees for wildlife and erosion control; maintaining an expansive trail system, and installing permanent hunting blinds." Bill Lagermann also received the Metcalfe County Soil Conservation District Forestry Award for Red Lick Ranch in 2017.
