LWC Football beats Georgetown 37-31 in overtime

No. 4 Lindsey Wilson Football beats No. 15 Georgetown 37-31 in overtime in NAIA Football Game of the Week

By Chris Wells

Georgetown, KY - Lindsey Wilson's Mark Pruitt recorded his first interception of the season and Jaleel Warren snagged his first career reception -- a 25-yard touchdown -- in overtime to lift No. 4 Lindsey Wilson football to a 37-31 win over host and No. 15 Georgetown (Ky.) on Saturday in the NAIA Game of the Week at Toyota Stadium.

The Pruitt interception came on the second play in the overtime for the Tigers (4-3, 1-2 in the Mid-South Bluegrass Division) to give Lindsey Wilson (5-1, 2-0) the opportunity to produce any type of points for the win.

Before the Pruitt pick, Demani Jenkins put Georgetown behind with chains with an 11-yard sack, forcing the Tigers in the unenviable position of second-and-21. Jenkins finished the game with six tackles and two sacks in the game.

While the defense did its job in the extra period, the Blue Raider offense needed just one play to cap the win.

Cameron Dukes connected with a wide-open Warren down the right seam for the 25-yard score and win.

The overtime win runs Lindsey Wilson's all-time record to 5-2 in games that go beyond regulation.

Georgetown -- who never led in the game -- tied the game midway through the fourth quarter. Hunter Krause found Shawn Gillam for a 13-yard touchdown pass and then bootlegged a two-point conversion to tie the game at 31-31.

Both teams had a chance to break the tie in regulation.

Georgetown's Jack Nguyen missed a 41-yard field goal attempt wide right with just over two minutes in the game. Lindsey Wilson's Jared Dougherty had is 48-yard field goal blocked with six seconds left in the regulation to send the game to the extra frame.

Lindsey Wilson dominated the opening half, outgaining the Tigers 191-77 in total yards. However, the Blue Raiders committed nine penalties for 91 yards to allow Georgetown to stay within reach -- 17-10 at the break.

Lindsey Wilson jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. Dukes hit Cam Wyche for a 48-yard touchdown on the Blue Raiders' first offensive play of the game. Wyche finished with three catches for 96 yards.

Dougherty added a 41-yard field goal on Lindsey Wilson's next drive for the 10-0 lead.

The Tigers dented the scoreboard in the early stages of the second quarter as Nguyen connected on a 20-yard field goal to trim the deficit to 10-3.

In a game of momentum swings, Georgetown looked to have grabbed the momentum forcing a fumble on its own one-yard line as Lindsey Wilson tried to extend its lead to 17-3.

It took four plays for Lindsey Wilson to grab the advantage back.

Isaac Aguero posted his first career interception and returned it 22 yards for the score to give the Blue Raiders that 17-3 advantage they squandered earlier.

Georgetown climbed back within a score just before halftime. The Tigers managed to keep their late-half touchdown drive alive with a pair of Lindsey Wilson penalties. Daric Pugh scored the first of his two touchdowns on the day to cap the drive. He finished with a team-high 90 rushing yards in the game.

The touchdown gave the Tigers the momentum heading into the break. They carried the positive energy into the second half.

After the Georgetown defense forced a three-and-out, the Tigers used a 12-play, 71-yard drive to knot the game at 17-17. Pugh punched in the game-tying score from the four-yard line midway through the third quarter.

Lindsey Wilson's Blake Ingleton asserted himself into the proceedings on the next Blue Raider drive. Ingleton broke a second-and-10 from the LWC 10-yard line and sprinted 90 yards for the go-ahead score.

The touchdown run marked the longest rush in Lindsey Wilson history and the second longest play from scrimmage. The six points also moved Ingleton to the top of the program's all-time scoring list, passing Mark Corbett. Following his second touchdown of the day, Ingleton now has 240 career points.

Georgetown -- who posted 230 total yards in the second half -- pulled within a point on the first play of the fourth quarter as Krause found Gilliam for a five-yard touchdown. The extra point failed after a botched snap.

Ingleton broke is second big run of the game -- this time a 55-yard jaunt -- on the next Lindsey Wilson possession to give the Blue Raiders an eight-point lead. Ingleton finished with 190 rushing yards on 12 carries in the game.

Lindsey Wilson finished the game outgaining the Tigers 425-307 in the win -- the fifth straight over Georgetown after dropping the first four in the series. Georgetown is one of only two teams the Blue Raiders have played all nine years of their existence.

While the 182 penalty yards plagued the Blue Raiders throughout the game, it was another strong effort from the Lindsey Wilson defense.

The Blue Raiders held the Tiger offense to nearly 70 yards below its season average of 374.3 yards per game. Trent Mueller led the Blue Raiders with 16 tackles while Holt Keeling record 15 tackles, including seven solos, and a pass breakup.

Stevie Miller joined Aguero and Pruitt with an interception in the game as the Blue Raiders won the turnover battle three to two.

Georgetown's Robert Sheffield and Jack Sutkamp led the Tigers with seven tackles each.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 1:30pmCT on Saturday, Oct. 20, as the Blue Raiders travel to Cumberland (Tenn.) in Lebanon, Tennessee.
