Poem by Ray Miller: October Has Come Again By former Adair County resident Ray Miller Author of two books of poetry Submitted by his daughter, Celia Downey October has come again - we heard the geese last night Their sounds were gently southward - the moon was full and bright The frost was on their wing tips - the cold winds in their eyes Oh it touched our lonely hearts to hear their fading cries The sun keeps dipping lower - the nights are cool and still The fog lifts from the spring creek and drifts around the hill The red sumac and Cedars outline the old fence row While the port wine sweet gum embraces mistletoe It's the time when walnuts fall and daisies fade away When kitchens smell of apples and barns of clover hay It's the time when men take mules and wagons out at night They bring the corn and pumpkins gathered by lantern light It's the time when honey comb has sugared in the can When homegrown buttered popcorn is jumping in the pan It's the time for candy pulls - for stories in the night And a time for feather beds beneath the shadowed light It's a time of memories - of olden days gone by When purple scarlet sunsets inflamed the changing sky When children came in at dark - their faces all aglow Crowding around the fireplace and waiting for the snow This gentle time is gone - we heard the winds last night Take down our last colors then blew them out of sight The holidays are coming and life still gives its best Willow cat sleeps on the fire hearth by Jack at rest The horses are in the barn shed - their bins are filled with hay The sheep are fat and woolly - the lambs just jump and play The crows are in the corn field - the hills are turning white The windows are all shuttered - the doors are buckled tight. - Ray Miller This story was posted on 2018-10-11 19:16:57
