JIM - Christmas Wish List, 18 Dec 1946

2017-12-18 - Columbia Dairies, back then, at 203 N Monroe Street, Columbia, KY (???) - Photo from the collection of JIM.
Christmas Wish List 12-18-1946 December 1946 found Columbia humming away. Most--not all, but most--war-time rationing was a thing of the past, merchants could offer a wider array both of necessary and luxury items than they had since 1941, and pent up consumerism flexed it muscle. Shacklette Jewelers had recently opened in the New Adair Hotel, as had the Adair Fruit Market in the Lacy Building, Campbellsville Street, and come the 20th, Wooten's Restaurant would open to serve three meals a day. In the December 18th News, the last edition of the year, another relative newcomer to the Columbia business scene expressed Christmas greetings to its customers and to readers in general.

NIH survey good news: Teen opiod misuse at historic lows . . .

. . . But vaping increase is a worry
NIH's (National Institute of Health) 2017 Monitoring the Future survey shows both vaping and marijuana are more popular than traditional cigarettes or pain reliever misuse
Click on headline for article with video

Nearly 1 in 3 students in 12th grade report past year use of some kind of vaping device, raising concerns about the impact on their health. What they say is in the device, however, ranges from nicotine, to marijuana, to "just flavoring."

The survey also suggests that use of hookahs and regular cigarettes is declining. These findings come from the 2017 Monitoring the Future (MTF) survey of eighth, 10th and 12th graders in schools nationwide, reported today by the director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the National Institutes of Health, along with scientists from the University of Michigan, who conduct the annual research.

The survey asks teens about "any vaping" to measure their use of electronic vaporizers. It is important to note that some research suggests that many teens do not actually know what is in the device they are using, and even if they read the label, not all labeling is consistent or accurate.

Commentary: Real wrestling is exciting, fast-paced, never dull

She's a booster for the sport just introduced to Adair County Schools this year: 'It's great fun. Short matches. Fans are on their feet cheering most of the time, ' . . . so you don't even have time for your behind to get numb.' - PEGGY FUDGE

By Peggy Fudge
Personal Commentary

I was warned that watching my nephew wrestle would be difficult. Forewarned was not forearmed. The shock of seeing your kid's face being pressed into the mat is never forgotten, but you get past that pretty quickly. Josh started wrestling (Real Wrestling) in middle school and showed a real talent for it.
