J.O.Y. Ministries holding free summer camps for kids

From Maggie Coleman and Krystal Cundiff

As we head into summer we have the opportunity to run summer camps for elementary, middle/high school students.

These students will be learning about healthy lifestyle habits, life skills, academic content, team building and that they are deeply loved by the Creator of the universe!

We are so thankful to have loving, caring educators that are willing to give us a portion of their summer to help us care for these students. We are so excited about having more opportunities to serve young people as this is what started our ministry and ultimately where our hearts will probably forever be!

Business coach Luke Ramsey to speak on growth from within

A Business Incubator mention has resulted in a guest speaker bringing experience to Columbia. As a City Council member I continuosly study possibilities that can recruit jobs to Columbia, along with ideas to improve historic downtown. I asked Mayor Curtis Hardwick about a study for a city business incubator to support young entrapreneurs and create jobs. He suggested getting more information at the same time Mr. Ramsay was featured at a neighboring county's event. He has since accepted an invitation to speak in Adair County. - LW

During the past few weeks, Dad and I have talked bout some of our favorite memories. From moving to the [Adair County] farm in 1974 and transitioning from that experience in 1992.

During those years, I can honestly say that everything I value in life, came about from those years. My love of outdoors, great writers and music flourished in that environment. I have such warm memories of taking long walks with him through the woods. He would often quiz me on the genus species of trees and flowers, tell me about the importance of protecting and respecting wildlife.

Joyce M. Coomer offers personal comments on Dumpster Diving

Writer offers benefits of Dumpster Diving but only if treasure seekers follow certain rules. She says "There are people who will open every sack in a dumpster and dig through it like a hen scratching for worms. They can and do make an unbelievable mess. They should make sure anything they fling out of the dumpster that they don't want should be put back into the dumpster."

By Joyce M. Coomer

I frequently opine that someone could run a good junk store with items removed from dumpsters in this town. More often than you'd think, many still-useful items are callously tossed into a dumpster, without any regard to their condition nor whether or not someone else could utilize the items, maybe even really need the items.

Cynthia A. Meyer - Comments on Mystery ID 79324 orange fungi

She wonders if it might be "Chicken of the Woods," edible under specific conditions, as is "Hen of the Woods," under specific conditions, a highly prized mushroom which should be gathered only by mushroom experts. Readers are advised that a mistake in identifying mushrooms can be fatal if consumed. The information is posted to raise awareness of mushrooms and hope that one day there will be enough mushroom expertise right here to know the difference, and that maybe, one day mushroom culture and mushroom harvesting in the wild might offer business opportunities here. - CM.

By Cynthia A Meyer

Without a close up of the mushrooms it would be difficult to identify, however there is a tasty little morsel of fungi named "Chicken of the Woods" which not surprisingly is supposed to taste like chicken.

I have seen one other Chicken of the Woods several years ago, but wrongly assumed since it was so brightly colored it may poisonous...

It was not until recently when my son brought in a sister mushroom- "Hen of the Woods" - which looks more like a fluffy hen that I realize what a culinary morsel I passed by back then.

Todd Robertson: Real issue is people searching through businesses' trash

Suggests what is generally referred to as 'dumpster diving' a big problem
Comments re photo 79325 Neighbors are tired of picking up overflow trash Todd Robertson writes:
I think the real issue at hand is people searching through the business's trash receptacles at night. As a business owner we have been dealing with this for a while now. I have also spoken to other business owners across town that are having the same issues. Individuals are coming at night and opening all of the trash bags and they are leaving a huge mess every night.

We have even had entire trash bags taken from our cans. Something needs to be done to stop this but from what I've been told it is not illegal to search through others trash. These people can be cited for littering but until someone catches them it is going to continue. Something seriously needs to be done. Hopefully others will comment and we can work together to get this stopped. --Todd Robertson
Todd, thanks - That element of dumpster diving is an important one, and I'll be the first to agree with you that something needs changing. Hope everyone will have an open view on it. There are places in the world where this isn't a problem. It won't be in the City of Columbia when fiscal court adopts a better system - while stricter policing and heavier penalties might work - this doesn't seem to be a wise use of city or law enforcement resources. The solution may be much simpler, cheaper, and more effective if ordinances are changed - replacing those which don't work with newer simpler one which are efficient, effective, and relative to what we are doing much, much, much cheaper - EW

Can anybody help locate information on Edith Walker's script for the outdoor drama, "The Affair at Tucker's Station"? which was presented at a one-time amphitheatre on the campus of Lindsey Wilson College?

There is a great deal of interest from CM readers to learn more, especially with the focus this summer on TheatreFest! and Shakespeare in the Barn, as well as the heritage Chestnut Tree this remarkable woman planted at the historic Field House and which is now contributing so much to the beauty of late spring. - EW
