Letter: Square Signage

James Roberts writes:
I have in the past mentioned putting the directional signs across the crosswalk on the square. That went nowhere. Put them on the grass section around the courthouse on all sides. They won't get run over there. Not as likely!

Escorting the wreath to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

2024-04-25 - Arlington, VA - Photo courtesy Sheila Helm.
Sheila writes, "Our granddaughter, Gracie Burton (front left), was one of two 8th graders chosen by her school to assist in the escorting of the wreath to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery, just outside Washington, DC, on April 23, 2024. This was a huge honor and a once in a lifetime experience. What a memorable moment."

The school, Good Shepherd School in Frankfort, also notes in a post on social media that a little before the ceremony, four tour buses of veterans entered the gates, and all the 8th grade students on the trip "made a line and shook just about every veteran's hand that came by."

Gracie is the daughter of Lacey Helm-Taylor and Ronnie Burton.

Donate Life KY Scholarship winners announced

From Shelley Snyder

Out of an impressive pool of more than 70 applicants hailing from 38 counties across Kentucky, 20 extraordinary individuals have been selected to receive 2024 Donate Life Kentucky Scholarships valued at $1000 each. These students have demonstrated exceptional dedication to promoting the Donate Life mission and educating their peers about the life-saving impact of registering as an organ, eye, and tissue donor.

"For over 30 years, the Circuit Clerk's office issued driver's license and asked every customer about registering as a donor and giving $1 to public education about organ, eye and tissue donation. Although we no longer issue driver's licenses, we remain steadfast in our commitment to helping our community through education and outreach about this lifechanging Donate Life mission. In our county, and every county in Kentucky, people have been saved and healed by the gift of life. Today, over 1000 Kentuckians still wait for their gift of life. Organ, eye and tissue donors are heroes," explains Dennis Loy, Adair Circuit Clerk.

"Giving back to these students, many of whom are donor families & recipients, is such an honor. I extend a heartfelt congratulations to all the scholarship winners and express appreciation to every applicant for their dedication to the Donate Life mission."

The Donate Life Kentucky Scholarship winners for 2024 are:

Full Moon Over the Ridge

Roldcat writes, "Although each month's full moon has a unique name, the name doesn't really have anything to do with the actual moon.

April's full moon which occurred last night, on the 23rd, is called the 'pink moon'. With the thin layer of clouds that we had in Crocus (Southeastern Adair County) the moon did project a pinkish glow in the sky."

Letter: Thank you for reminder about signs on right of ways

Vicky Pike writes:
Thank you for posting the article from the Kentucky Transportation Department on illegally placed signs being removed. Signs posted on the right of way slow up the mowing process and block drivers view when turning at intersections.

If you need to put a sign up please do it with the permission of the adjoining landowner where it is far enough back that it doesn't hinder mowing crews and block the view of oncoming traffic. We have enough accidents as it is. Dont put a sign that could block a drivers view. It's just common sense.
