History: The Last Great Turkey Drive

From a ca 1970s/1980s Daily Statesman
107 N Reed Street, Columbia, KY
Lewis Jessee submitted this story and photo from an old Columbia, KY Daily Statesman about the last turkey drive through here. There's no date on the photo copy, and no author attribution, and that would be welcome. The story follows:

Talk of Thanksgiving turkeys calls up a host of memories for Stewart Hutchison of Columbia.

Mr. Hutchison is the last living member of the last great turkey drive in Adair County.

Caesar, the Great Dane

2013-05-25 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square - Photo by Ed Waggener. Caesar, the Great Dane, got his share of attention this morning at the very busy Farmer's Market on the Square. With him are David Moore, of Gradyville, KY, and Moore's mother, Barbara Armitage. At 9amCT this morning, the market had sold out of strawberries, from both Tucker's Station and from Jerry Compton's stand. A little after 8amCT, Jerry had sold out, left, and said he would pick more for today's market, which is scheduled to close at 12pm noon CT. It's open every Saturday, from 8am-12pmCT, during the growing season, in the parking lot at 424 Public Square.

McCormick-Deering Hay Baler with hit and miss engine

2013-05-25 - S High Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. It could be a museum piece: A piece which has drawn a steady stream of visitors is this old McCormick-Deering hay baler - not yet a 100 years old but soon will be - which is part of a big auction sale in Downtown Columbia today, Saturday, May 25, 2013. It's from the 1920s, and was owned by the late Joe Russell Barbee. The machine has a hit and miss engine. Unlike today's balers, this one was set up in a stationary position. The hay to be baled was fed from the platform on the left, and the machine baled the hay or straw into cubes bound by wire.

Joe Moore says ironwork is from 1885 Courthouse

2013-05-24 - SW corner, Greensburg & High Streets, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Joe Moore
a walking encyclopedia on the courthouses of Adair County, says that the ironwork at this entrance to the Alta Garnett house was originally on the 1885 Adair County Courthouse. Mr. Moore was acting as a docent for the event, yesterday, sharing memories of the grand old house, one of Adair County's most important landmarks, with some of the crowd taking a preview look at the estate auction which takes place Saturday, May 25, 2013. The sale is expected to draw one of the biggest crowds to Downtown Columbia ever to such an event.

Chaney story timely, remembering Civil War

And on shared heritage of being half Confederate, half rebel

Jackson Brower writes:
Tom Chaney is a great writer of history who seems to tell a lot that most folks are probably unaware of about important local history in the 1800s that had profound effects on the whole country. This is very appropriate, since 2013 marks the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. It's very interesting that Adair County was half Confederate and half Union. Leonard Burton of Pellyton was very knowledgeable about local civil war history. Speaking of half rebel - half yankee, I'm that way, too...my mom's ancestors from PA fought for the Union, and my dad's kin from NC fought for the Confederacy. - Jackson Brower

Comment on story: Wishes flags could fly until Christmas season

Comments re photo 49660 Flags are flying at noon in downtown Columbia

Della Shaw writes:
So happy to at last see the flags and really wish they would be left up until the Christmas decorations are put up. Other towns have flags up all the time. Since they were purchased with donations anyway, why can\'t they stay up? It\'s really a pleasure to drive down the street and see the flags flying. --Della Shaw
Thanks, Della Shaw: For the comment and for being one of those who've sponsored the flags. -EW
