Chaney story timely, remembering Civil War

And on shared heritage of being half Confederate, half rebel

Jackson Brower writes:
Tom Chaney is a great writer of history who seems to tell a lot that most folks are probably unaware of about important local history in the 1800s that had profound effects on the whole country. This is very appropriate, since 2013 marks the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. It's very interesting that Adair County was half Confederate and half Union. Leonard Burton of Pellyton was very knowledgeable about local civil war history. Speaking of half rebel - half yankee, I'm that way, too...my mom's ancestors from PA fought for the Union, and my dad's kin from NC fought for the Confederacy. - Jackson Brower

Comment on story: Wishes flags could fly until Christmas season

Comments re photo 49660 Flags are flying at noon in downtown Columbia

Della Shaw writes:
So happy to at last see the flags and really wish they would be left up until the Christmas decorations are put up. Other towns have flags up all the time. Since they were purchased with donations anyway, why can\'t they stay up? It\'s really a pleasure to drive down the street and see the flags flying. --Della Shaw
Thanks, Della Shaw: For the comment and for being one of those who've sponsored the flags. -EW
