Larry Smith: Jamestown, KY Local Option election July 23, 2013

By Larry Smith, 92.7 FM, The WAVE

A special election has been scheduled for the City of Jamestown, KY for Tuesday, July 23, 2013.

The issue is alcohol.

In a clip now running on our station, Greg Shaw of "Progress Jamestown" says that the election will allow restaurants which seat at least 100, and derive at least 75% of their revenue from food, will be allowed to serve alcoholic beverages, if the election is successful.

The order to hold the special election was ordered by Russell County Judge Gary D. Robertson after Russell County Clerk Leisha Popplewell certified the enough signatures on the petition were validated to warrant the election.

The area which will vote includes Jamestown City voters to Lake Cumberland. - Larry Smith

The 1st Annual ACHS Senior/Parent Breakfast, hosted by the Adair County Adult Education Center and the Adair County High School was held at the LWC Cranmer Dining Center on Friday, May 17, 2013. Those who attended were given the opportunity to hear four informative and congratulatory speeches given by Alan Reed, AC Schools Superintendent, Ron Heath, AC Work Ready Committee Chair, Chris Schmidt, LWC Dean of Students, and LeAnna Bennett, Assistant Program Director for the Adult Education Center.

The breakfast was a huge success, but would not have been made possible without the support of the community. A special thanks to all the businesses and individuals who donated time and money to this event. Adair County has proven, once again, its generosity to our younger generation. Lindsey Wilson College provided the dining hall; decorations were by Flowers 'n Things. - LeAnna Bennett

Mike Watson: Tobacco as a cash crop

Tobacco has played a major role in Adair County's economy - and Adair County tobacco products were especially prized by buyers, fetching superior prices. Mike Watson traces the history of early tobacco production here and in neighboring counties with notes of innovations by local growers and the coming of the tobacco warehouse system, writing, 'Many early records mention Adair businessmen who bought and sold tobacco by the hogshead and waited for the water to rise enough on the Green River to launch a flatboat bound for New Orleans. John Field was one of the Columbia merchants who regularly bought and sold tobacco. Later, tobacco warehouses were erected Greensburg and Campbellsville, these came with construction of better roads. In time, tobacco could be hauled to more distant markets, such as Lebanon, Springfield, Bowling Green and Louisville'

By Mike Watson
Adair County Historian

The natives of the Americas cultivated tobacco long before the European re-discovery of the New World. It was a major product, important in every-day life and in ritual. With the coming of the Europeans, tobacco found a new life. In a few short years, the importation of the "weed" into Europe became big business. Jamestown Colony settlers found the plant to be the salvation of the colony. When problems with the native population became intense, the streets of Jamestown were plowed over and planted in tobacco. A true cash crop was born from the scrawny plants of that day. John Rolfe and others crossbred varieties to develop a larger, milder product. Tobacco, then, will be the salvation of many early Americans.
