Northern Water Snake

2009-11-07 - Shelbyville, KY - Photo by Pen. A northern water snake makes his way across Lake Shelby, which is many, many miles from downtown Columbia, and therefore should pose no immediate risk to those viewers with more delicate sensibilities. According to KentuckySnakes.org, it is "Our most common water snake, often confused with the cottonmouth or water moccasin. Prefers permanent water and can be found around ponds, even in urban habitats. Eats fish, frogs, toads and salamanders. Nasty disposition and will strike and bite if harassed."

Scenic Cumberland Co., KY: From the top of the Hill

2009-11-07 - Alpine Hill, Burkesville, KY - Photo by Kelly Crawhorn. "We took an early morning drive to Burkesville for a doctor's visit," Kelly Crawhorn wrote on Thursday, November 5, 2009. "I couldn't resist driving up to the Alpine Motel with my mom and two daughters. As a child, we used to go to Albany every weekend to visit my grandfather and uncles. On the way home, all of us children always tried to get Dad to drive up to the Motel so we could look out over Burkesville. We loved to do that! My girls loved it too." The scene looks out to the Houchens Shopping Center in the 200 block of North Main Street, on KY 61. North, and left in the photo, 27.6 by the big road, 29.7 with a shortcut up Scenic Kentucky 704, via Bakerton, Amandaville, Inroad, Dug Hill, Fairplay, Gadberry, and Tabor area, is the Adair County Courthouse. Daytrip: Take one way down, the other back for a grand 1.5 hour ride through some of America's some beautiful scenery.
