COF: Miss Patty, and her long suffering teachers, need new facility "Anyone who is agin a new building should hang their head in shame," COF says, but he says it doesn't need the whoop-de-doos that will be justified as necessary, such as a state of the art gymnasium About: Col. Wm. Casey School is in dire need of replacement The COF, Hiding out at Dun Roman Miss Patty and her long-suffering teachers are surely to be commended for the job they do under such trying circumstances and I agree with Mr McCammish and others who have opined. We definitely need new facilities but just the same I can't help but thinking t'wasn't that long ago when the elementary schools had no air conditioning but did have winders that propped up. The only computers were the blackboard, pen and pencil and the brain the Good Lord gave us Matter of fact, those blackboards also served in place of the electronic geegaws they call white boards. The school marm would pull down one of a series of maps or put a screen on a tripod against it, pull the shades and let the 8MM or slide projector whirr away. As I said, it wasn' all that long ago and we learned math skills mainly by rote, reading mainly by phonics, history and civics were taught as our birthright. The folks who went thru that system put man on the moon, created the computers that have been such a wonderment and, yes, even gave us the "white board." The system couldn't have been all that bad and I;d wager that the same achievement tests used today would have yielded much higher scores than the ones we are so embarrassed by today (or should be!). We need the new building, but why do we need a state of art gymnasium, for an elementary school? I'm sure we'll find all kind of other whoop-de-doos that will be justified as necessary for "Quality education in today's world," but in fact have nary a thing to do with our younguns learning what they need to know to succeed in life and continue to climb the education ladder. Anyone who is agin a new building should hang their head in shame. But those who insist on a Tag Mahal school should reexamine their priorities.
