Grandmother had faith, was right: son did return from war About: Great turnout for Veterans Program at ACPL By E.H. Lepiarczyk II I really enjoyed attending the veterans' program Monday evening at the library. It was good to meet with so many patriotic Adair Countians! I would like to share some memories of my grandmother, the late Effie Burton Grider. My grandmother was always proud of my grandfather, the late Daniel Marion Grider's services to our country during what she called the great world's war, namely World War I. My grandfather was fortunate that he was not engaged in combat during the war. Although the widow's pension from my grandfather's service in the army was quite meager, my grandmother was very proud of this pension she received after my grandfather's death. The late James Chrisley Grider, my uncle, was engaged in combat duty during World War II in Germany. My grandfather always worried about him and had an uneasy feeling about his absence from home in Adair County. My grandmother always reassured my grandfather that she was not uneasy about Uncle J. C.'s military duty. She fervently prayed for him as she did for all members of our family. Mother Grider's religious faith was strong and she was assured that Uncle J. C. would return home safely after the war. Papa Daniel would say, "Effie, I wish I could be as confident as you are about J. C.". Uncle J.
