Gary Murphy, 74, Casey County, KY (1949-2024)

Russell Gary Murphy, 74, of Liberty, KY, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, May 1, 2024.

He was a retired rural letter carrier for the US Postal Service. For several years, he worked with his father at Murphy and Mills Farm Supply in Liberty. Gary was also a self-employed heavy equipment welder and mechanic at Murphy's Repair Shop. He was a veteran of the US Army. Gary was Baptized at First Baptist Church of Liberty and attended Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.


He was born in Danville, KY on August 14, 1949, to the late Haskel Murphy, Sr. and Ruby Evelyn Bryant Murphy.

Gary was a storyteller and loved his grandsons. He loved riding motorcycles and loved John Deere tractors. Because of his lifetime trade, he loved to weld and enjoyed teaching others his crafts.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters, Shirley Ann Evans and Barbara Faye Lanham.

Gary is survived by his loving wife, Connie Davidson Murphy, whom he wed on July 24, 1976; his, daughter Becky Shepard and her husband, Bryan of Liberty; his grandsons, Hayden and Blayne Shepard; and his brother, Haskel Murphy, Jr. of Liberty.

The funeral service will be held at 2pmET on Sunday, May 5, 2024 at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Ronnie Haste. Bro. Johnny Maupin officiating. Burial will follow in Murphy Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Hayden Shepard, Blayne Shepard, Danny Bryant, Billy Sellers, Kevin Land, David McKinney, Kendall Thomas and Cecil Davidson.
